White House Unveils Plan to Fight Antibiotic-Resistant Germs | KSTP TV – Minneapolis and St. Paul.
The overuse of antibiotics in humans has been a problem probably within a day of the first round being used. At least this very urgent problem is on their radar!
The overuse in farm animals is simply criminal, not so much on the part of the farmers, but on the part of congress for not stopping it. When animals are given antibiotics unnecessarily resistant strains develop, for diseases the farmer didn’t even know were a problem in their herd. Most likely they weren’t a problem, the cow’s immune systems were taking care of things. But then these super-strains develop and suddenly there is a problem. These antibiotics get into our food supply and then we develop antibiotic resistant strains. No doctor or vet necessary to cause this problem.
Antibiotics should only be given to animals to save the animals life, just like for humans. Not to fatten them up (as is the norm) and not to prevent disease. Currently farmers give antibiotics to not only fatten up animals, but also because indoor feedlot operations are very unhygienic, very stressful for the animal, and are unnatural conditions (e.g. little sun, poor food (grains), etc). All of this leads to sick animals, thus they load up the animals food with antibiotics.
We are close to having NO options for some diseases, except to let nature works it’s course. Very sad, especially when it didn’t have to happen.
