People often panic when they have, what they perceive is, a setback. Setbacks can be many things: inflammation response to spicy food, vagus nerve autonomic response to die off toxins (telling your gut to purge), a more direct die off response, a bit of fructose malabsorption, a small histamine reaction, or maybe even a small setback from the original pathogenic infection (SIBO/SIFO). None of these things are likely going to last very long.
Several of these responses are much more sensitive when you don’t get enough sleep, are stressed, fatigued, menstruating, etc. So get a few good nights sleep, get a little exercise, eat very carefully, and just continue. Unless the worsening symptoms lasts for more than 4 days don’t assume a microbial setback.
Here is what normal progress looks like during the first 90 days. The blue bars are the daily progress, the red line is the 7 day average. Note how even large setbacks don’t mean much over a week or more.
As long as you stay in the “kill” phase, or on maintenance, you shouldn’t have major setbacks. But if you do think you’ve had a major setback, then just go back to the “kill phase” for a couple of weeks. If you’ve had SIBO or SIFO for many years or after several bouts of antibiotics and/or antifungals then you may actually have an actual setback or two. Again, don’t panic.

I bought the book and reading it now.
How long can someone stay on a kill phase or how long should you wait in between finishing a kill phase before starting it over?
Its believed I’ve had SIBO now for years and finally was given the breath test, i was diagnosed high levels of hydrogen and elevated methane, with prominent chronic diarrhea for 7+ years.
I’m hoping to say at the end of the treatment that I am healed and no more symptoms then I will get emotional support as I know I need this help but more importantly I need to be healed
Brenda, you’ve come to the right place. If you aren’t a member of the Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/The.Gut.Health.Protocol/ that can be very useful for people.
I read your book. After reading five other books yours is definitely the best. Is it important to take every one of the supplements every day during the kill faze? Thanks so much to pointing out how to fix a problem which doctors have not been able to diagno.
Yes, they should be taken per bottle directions when possible. Skipping days, especially early on, can allow the bacteria to grow back. However, there are some situations where it may be necessary (e.g. severe die-off symptoms).
Thanks. It’s helpful to know that things will improve.
John this is such a great resource!! Thank you so much for pointing me to this page! I feel so much better knowing my set backs are typical!
