If you are taking Phage Complete you already know how beneficial it is; repeat sales are through the roof. New research adds to the scientific evidence of just how beneficial it is. Of course the phage complex is the Phage Complete star. But, the phages are paired with 5 highly beneficial probiotic strains, hand selected for their gut restorative properties. If you are unfamiliar with Phage Complete you can read this page to catch up. You can also read more information on DE111 in this previous article.
One of those probiotic strains really stands out, Bacillus subtilis DE111. This is a soil based strain that has been shown to be highly competitive against unwanted bacteria in the gut, while coexisting just fine with beneficial strains! It is also one of the most researched probiotic species; Bacillus subtilis is featured, or mentioned, in over 145,000 research studies / papers on PubMed. Research studies have shown that the bacillus subtilis strain DE111 has significant benefits against both diarrhea and constipation. It can even help reduce body fat and improve athletic performance (see studies below).
A recent study found that compared to the placebo, the probiotic DE111 produced statistically significant improvements in the reduction of body fat percentage, and a strong trend indicating improved performance at the deadlift exercise. “These findings are encouraging for athletic individuals, both professional and recreational, that are looking for ways to naturally achieve maximum results from their training efforts,” said Dr. John Deaton
Germination
A recently released randomized, crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated germination activity of Bacillus subtilis DE111®. This indicates excellent survivability of DE111 (in the gut), as well as growth and reproduction of the strain in the digestive tract.
“Germination of spore-forming probiotics in the small intestines is of particular importance considering that a significant portion of the immune system is located in that portion of the gut and the majority of digestion and nutrient absorption occurs there… Prior to this new study, others have attempted to determine spore germination in the small intestine through simulated lab models or animal studies, but none have investigated actual in-vivo spore germination in the human small intestine.”
“This study provides clear evidence that DE111 spores germinate in the human small intestine. This then provides support to show that consuming B. subtilis DE111 effectively promotes and supports immune and digestive health.”
“Bacillus subtilis DE111® is a commercially available probiotic that has been shown to support a healthy gut microbiome and to promote digestive and immune health in both adults and children (Cuentas et al., 2017; Maher, 2019; Paytuví-Gallart et al., 2020; Slivnik et al., 2020; Toohey et al., 2020). The beneficial effect of B. subtilis has been shown to be 2-fold, in that both the spore and vegetative forms can confer benefits to the host (Huang et al., 2008; Elshaghabee et al., 2017). Spores of B. subtilis can themselves modulate the immune response of the host (Huang et al., 2008); however, the full potential of spore-based probiotics can only be achieved if they also germinate and become active vegetative cells in the small intestinal tract. The vegetative form of B. subtilis is also able to modulate the immune response and, in addition, secretes enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins, peptides, and antimicrobial compounds, which help balance the gut microbiota and aid digestion (Elshaghabee et al., 2017). Vegetative B. subtilis has also been shown to have antiviral properties against avian influenza and adenovirus (Esawy et al., 2011; Starosila et al., 2017)… Following passage through the stomach, germination of a B. subtilis spore-based probiotic is triggered by the rich nutrient environment of the small intestine (Tam et al., 2006). Once in the vegetative form, the probiotic is able to exert its beneficial effects supporting a healthy gastrointestinal tract.” — PubMed ID#PMC8366289
DE111 is one of the most beneficial probiotics available. Combined with the phage complex, DE111 and the 4 other gut healing probiotic strains are responsible for the excellent testimonials from people that have taken Phage Complete. This is because Phage Complete was designed from the ground up to benefit the gut, improve the microbiome and fight bad bacteria.
Other DE111 Research
Studies have shown that DE111 increases the number of “normal stools” compared to the placebo group, reducing both diarrhea and constipation.
“DE111 significantly improved gastrointestinal discomfort including constipation and diarrhea over the course of the study. Individuals in the DE111 group reported an increased frequency of normal type stools compared to those in the Placebo group. Therefore, a B. subtilis DE111 dose at 1 billion CFU/day may improve occasional constipation and diarrhea while helping to maintain gastrointestinal health.” — Journal of Probiotics and Health
DE111 has been studied in children (as young as 2 years old) and has shown significant benefits to their gut health. Personally I believe if your child’s gut seems fine then you probably shouldn’t be giving them probiotics, even Phage Complete. A good diet, appropriate for their age, is fine. If they’re old enough for pureed vegetables make sure they get those daily, they’re more important than fruit. But if their gut is out of whack, and they’ve seen their pediatrician, then Phage Complete may show significant benefits.
“Effect of Daily Bacillus subtilis DE111 Intake on Gastrointestinal Health and Respiratory Infections in Children Attending Day-care: A Randomised, Parallel, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Study – This study aimed to evaluate safety and efficacy of the probiotic Bacillus subtilis DE111® in gastrointestinal health and respiratory infections in preschool children. In a randomised, parallel, double-blind placebo-controlled study 102 day-care attending children aged 2-6 years received B. subtilis DE111® (1 × 109 CFU) or placebo once a day for 8 weeks. Participant diaries were completed by parents and evaluated by investigators to follow the incidence and duration of indicators of gastrointestinal health and respiratory infections as well as any adverse events. Saliva samples were collected at baseline and completion of the intervention to measure sIgA levels. A significant reduction in duration of vomiting (2 days vs. 14 days, p=0.045), duration of hard stools (0 days vs 15 days, p=0.044), and duration of overall gastrointestinal discomfort (18 days vs. 48 days, p=0.0499) was seen. No difference in incidence of respiratory infection was observed (41.3% probiotic vs 36.2% placebo, p=0.60). A statistically significant increase of sIgA levels was observed in the placebo group (1.37-fold, p<0.01), but not in the probiotic group (1.05-fold, p=0.61). Overall, data suggests intake of the probiotic B. subtilis DE111® is safe for use in children and supports a healthy gastrointestinal tract with a reduced duration of vomiting, hard stools and overall gastrointestinal discomfort.” — Journal of Probiotics & Health
In this study B.subtilis was found to reduce and prevent inflammation in the intestine.
“our results show that B. subtilis-based probiotics do possess properties that may help attenuate and prevent inflammatory responses in the intestine while also strengthening the gut barrier; a key property that helps prevent potentially sustaining chronic inflammation.” — DOI: 10.3389/fimmu.2019.00564
In the following study it was shown that DE111 may improve risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD).
“Strikingly, these effects were seen in a largely healthy population. These data suggest that B. subtilis supplementation may be beneficial for improving risk factors associated with CVD.“ — PubMed ID#33161737
DE111 has also received listings in Australia and New Zealand for the following health claims. Companies seeking to make a general level health claim for a food ingredient in Australia and New Zealand must perform a comprehensive and systematic review of evidence of a causal food-health relationship. Deerland (the company behind DE111) was able to conduct this assessment of the probiotic DE111 based on the wealth of peer-reviewed clinical publications on the strain.
“promotes growth of healthy gastrointestinal flora”

“supports and improves digestive health in children and adults”
“reduces total blood cholesterol or blood LDL cholesterol”

what brand sells this probiotic as an individual strain or in combination with other strains of similar action?
Catalina, Phage Complete contains this strain and 4 other gut beneficial strains. It also contains a phage complex that has been shown in independent research to amplify beneficial bacteria in the lower intestine (where it does the most good). The following page has more information.
