A new study shows that most artificial sweeteners cause our normally beneficial gut bacteria to become toxic!
A recent study out of Israel and Singapore has shown that that normal gut bacteria can become toxic when exposed to most artificial sweeteners. This study appears in the October 2018 edition of Molecules.
“In this study, the relative toxicity of six FDA-approved artificial sweeteners (aspartame, sucralose, saccharine, neotame, advantame and acesulfame potassium-k (ace-k)) and that of ten sport supplements containing these artificial sweeteners, were tested using genetically modified bioluminescent bacteria from E. coli.” — Molecules
The bioluminescent bacteria luminesce when exposed to toxins. They found that these bacteria clearly showed toxins being produced when they were exposed to these artificial sweeteners. Each sweetener produced different toxins at different concentrations of the sweetener.
Other studies have shown that these artificial sweeteners can have a profound affect on our microbiome. This study shows one of the reasons why, toxins produced by our microbiota.
An important note here is that natural sweeteners, such as stevia and monk fruit are not implicated here. Other studies have also shown that they do not have these negative effects. So if you need to satisfy your sweet tooth, avoid foods with the sweeteners listed above and stick stevia and monk fruit.
